Weekly Update 3/10

Greetings Team Equinox Families:.

Report cards are going home today! Look for those in the mail this weekend.

We would like to invite parents to sign up for our Spring Student-Led Conferences. Team Equinox participates in Student Led conferences because we are in the business of growing student responsibility, developing executive functioning tools, and other real life skills. This spring, the conferences will be held Monday, April 1st and Monday, April 8th from 4-6:30PM.

We expect that all students will present at Student-Led Conferences. The sign up is linked here. We will also send home a paper copy of this- you will only hear from us if we need to reschedule.

Humanities:

In Social Studies, we began learning about the Aztec Empire as our final ancient culture. We took notes on their elements of culture, we learned about their government and the idea of “tribute” through a tribute board game, and we learned about some of their gods/goddesses and religious practices like human sacrifice. Students also took their weekly map quiz to practice Geo Skills and we had our weekly current events discussion through the Week in Rap video.

Homework: Students can always study their Geo Skills using websites like Lizard Point and Sheppard Software!

This week in Language Arts we wrapped up our Argumentative Writing Unit. Essays were finalized, edited and published. Students learned about citing evidence and completed Works Cited to include in their argumentative essays. Our executive functioning journal write this week was on the topic of Emotional Control. We also celebrated 1,000 minutes of reading in class since the beginning of the year- what an achievement! Our local Hannaford donated a cake to help us celebrate! Class has been doing outstanding with in-class reading and have all set their reading goals for the month of March in their monthly reading calendars this week.

Homework:

7th Grade Math: This week students began to explore algebraic expressions and equations. Students identified what the variables and numbers mean in the context of the problem and then solved the problem. They also represented each expression with a tape diagram. Students also reflected on their trimester 2 learning.

Parent Resources:

Homework: Students homework assignment this week is to complete their Trimester 2 reflections. Reflections are found in their math Google Classroom. These reflections are due March 12.

8th Grade Math: This week grade 8 began the Pythagorean Theorem Unit. They explored finding the area and side lengths of squares as an introduction to the Pythagorean Theorem. Next week students will start to explore triangles. Students also reflected on their trimester 2 learning.

Parent Resources:

Homework: Students homework assignment this week is to complete their Trimester 2 reflections. Reflections are found in their math Google Classroom. These reflections are due March 12.

Executive Functioning/Speech-Language Pathology:

In ELA studens journaled about: the executive functioning skill of Emotional Control:

The ability to manage your emotions to achieve goals, complete tasks, or control and direct your behavior.

Some of us have a short fuse and frustrate easily, while others stay cool despite irritation. When is a time you did or didn’t control your emotions?

This skill is important to help us do what we need to do in order to reach that future goal and the future positive feeling we want to feel when we achieve that goal. For example, When I walk out the door for school in the morning, I know what I want to look like and that I want to feel calm, and prepared. Because I want that picture and feeling, I then know I need to control my morning fatigue (emotion).
