Weekly Email 3/27

Greetings Team Equinox Families:

We miss our students so much! We are extremely sad that we won’t be returning back to our classrooms this year and see our amazing students in the same way as before.

Thank you so much for your patience in this new and unusual circumstance! We are working diligently to check in with families during this time, but please do not hesitate to reach out.

As students are receiving academic feedback virtually, we have found that email is the best way to do this. If your student does not have access to their school email account, please electronically sign this document and email it to your student’s advisor.

Because we are using Google Classroom for everything, we have found as teachers that the amount of email from Google Classroom is overwhelming. One strategy that has worked for some of us is to turn off email notifications on Google Classroom (go to Settings on Google Classroom to do this). This has made the Gmail inbox feel less daunting, and instead of being inundated, students can do a daily check of each Google Classroom, along with checking email.

We are also offering “office hours” in which students can join a group video chat to get help on assignments, ask questions, and connect with their peers. Students can access the link to these daily office hours in the Google Classrooms for each core class.

Here’s what your child has been up to this week on Team Equinox~

Science: This week in science, we are reviewing our science and engineering skills through exercise! Students have completed eight days of workouts! If they are missing days, they can workout over the weekend and add that to our data log. I am so impressed by student’s flexibility and workout prowess. We will continue to take data until Friday, April 3. There were also a few “benchmark” surveys for students to complete if they haven’t already.

Homework: Google Classroom Assignments from Monday-Friday

Social Studies: This week, we spent more time reviewing Jewish ghettos in the Holocaust. We specifically focused on different ways that people resisted the ghettos through reading, watching videos, and looking at images. Students are sharing insightful thoughts, feelings, and questions! Next week we will take some time to look at Anne Frank’s experience in the Holocaust.

Homework: Make sure to complete each of the daily assignments on Google Classroom!

In Language Arts, we are aiming to finish our Holocaust book unit by next Friday, April 3rd. Your students are reading The Book Thief, Prisoner B-3087, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, or Number the Stars. All students are being asked to fill out a Google Form every day sharing three notes on their books; if they finish their books, they can take three notes on a book of their choice. If you’re looking for a movie to watch that ties to curriculum, “The Boy in the Striped Pajamas” and “The Book Thief” are good options (both very sad, but that comes with the subject matter). Today, students were given an Etymology Test or a Spelling Test on Google Forms. These looked a little different than usual because of the online nature of everything now. If you’d like to give your child a spelling test, please by all means, do! You can send me a picture of it, or just email me (Anna Rehm) and let me know how it went.

Homework: Read 30 minutes every day! Keep up with Holocaust book (required pages are posted on Google Classroom daily). Next week spelling students will be studying List #4 and Etymology students will have links to Vocabulary.com posted on Google Classroom on Monday (this is the last week of Vocabulary.com before we move back to Quizlet for Etymology). Please reach out to Ms. Rehm if you have questions on any of this: arehm@mymtsd-vt.org

7th Grade Math: Students spent this week reviewing ratios and unit rates or working on MobyMax a web based program that contains all math strands and adapts to students' needs. Students also had opportunities to play some math games. Next week students will continue their review of ratios and unit rates.

Homework: Google Classroom Assignments from Monday-Friday

8th Grade Math: Students spent this week reviewing the algebra concepts of combining like terms and solving equations. Students also worked on MobyMax, a web based program that contains all math strands and adapts to students' needs. Students will continue to review solving equations next week.

Homework: Google Classroom Assignments from Monday-Friday
