Here’s what your child has been up to this week on Team Equinox~


Science:

In Science, we are continuing our cells and disease units. Students should have finished their Cell Factory Group Project- if they have not yet, please have them work on it this weekend. Also due was the Microscopy is Art Project- which was due last week. Next week, we will have a cells assessment and start our work on structure vs. function.


Humanities:

In Social Studies, we spent the week reinforcing our geography skills with extra practice. We had a mix of choice in what specific skills we wanted to work on in the beginning of the week as well as an overall skills exercise. We also completed our weekly map quiz and did our Week in Rap current events discussion.

Homework - Students should complete any missing work. Students always have the option to study for their Geo Skills Map Quiz, happening on most Wednesdays (Helpful websites: Lizardpoint and Sheppard Software)

In ELA, we completed our first Assessment on Paragraph Writing. Students characterized one character from the novel using evidence from the text. Assessments have begun to be scored and should be returned with feedback next week. We also spent time with Ms. Koester working on Executive Functioning and organizing our binders. We are continuing to read the Outsiders and will finish the novel next week.

Homework: Chapter 6 Journal Write. Independent reading for 30 minutes each night (for 5 of 7 days per week).


7th Grade Math: This week students continued their work on scale drawings and explored the relationship between scale factor and area. Students were supposed to take a summative assessment on Friday, but it has been pushed back to Monday of next week. Next week students will begin their exploration of ratios.

Khan Academy is one of the online resources that is used in math class. Attached is a parent letter / permission form that describes Khan Academy in more detail. Please sign and return the permission form as soon as possible so your child can begin using Khan Academy in the classroom.

Homework: Students had one homework assignment to complete this week called “Scale on the Trail”. It was due Thursday, October 4. If your child did not turn it in, please have them complete it and turn it in as soon as possible.


8th Grade Math: This week students continued to simplify expressions and solve equations with one variable, with and without models. Students also began to look at equations that had no solution and infinite solutions. They will continue this practice next week.
