Weekly Update 1/19

Greetings Team Equinox Families:

We would like to invite families to join us on the morning of Friday, February 22nd for our Career Exploration Presentations. During our PLP time (Personalized Learning Plan), students have been researching a specific career they are interested in and they are creating a presentation to share. We hope that all students can also complete a job shadow or interview with a professional in that career, and include this information in their project. We will have a team breakfast from 7:30-8:00 am, and presentations will occur from 8:00-10:00 am.

Humanities:

In Social Studies, we have been learning about ancient Greece. This week, we engaged in an inquiry around mythology - we read sources about Greek myths in order to answer the question, “What meanings did myths about gods, goddesses, creatures, and heroes have for the ancient Greeks?” We also took a map quiz to practice our Geo Skills. We ended the week by participating in our own Team Equinox Olympics, representing ancient Greek city-states in a variety of competitions.

Homework: Students should finish any missing work, including the Ancient Greek Inquiry Packet and the accompanying Lucid Chart. Students can always study their Geo Skills using websites like Lizard Point and Sheppard Software!

This week in Language Arts we continued our unit on informational texts and argumentative writing with an examination of “fake news”. We read news articles about this topic and learned about different types of misinformation. These skills will prepare us for a writing assignment that we will begin next week.

Homework: Read January book to be caught up with Reading Calendar. Movie guide and

NewsELA article questions due if not completed during class time.

Independent reading for 30 minutes each night (for 5 of 7 days per week).

Students also worked on interpreting word problems involving positive and negative numbers, writing equations and using number lines to represent the situation. Next week students will begin exploring multiplication and division of integers and rational numbers.
